Denturism
You're not alone
Did you know that in Quebec, 58% of people over the age of 45 wear dentures, and that within this same age group, nearly a quarter (24%) no longer have any natural teeth? These figures come from the Canadian Community Health Survey conducted by Statistics Canada in 2008-2009.
Another Statistics Canada study, carried out in 2003, reveals that Quebec is the Canadian province with the highest percentage of people aged 15 and over who are completely edentulous (14% vs. 9% for Canada as a whole). This phenomenon has been linked to the lower consumption of fluoridated water and higher tobacco use in the province of Quebec; tobacco use is one of the factors causing periodontal disease leading to tooth loss.
The number of toothless people is falling
Across Canada, the proportion of the population over the age of 15 without any natural teeth has nevertheless fallen significantly since the 1990s.
This decline can be attributed to a number of factors:
- increasingly widespread water fluoridation;
- improving access to dental care services;
- increased revenues;
- improving the dentist-population ratio;
- expansion of dental care insurance programs.
1 in 4 Canadians
Despite a general improvement in oral health, nearly 1 in 4 Canadians (aged 15 and over) still wear partial or full dentures.
Chances are, then, that you come across several people wearing dentures on a daily basis, without even knowing it.
Fortunately, Canada’s 2,000 denturists can offer choice solutions to the millions of Canadians with missing teeth.
Healthy eating
One in ten Quebecers aged 65 and over refrains from eating food because of oral problems. In addition, seniors who sometimes or often avoid foods because of mouth problems are less likely to consume 5 or more servings of fruits and vegetables daily, and they present a high nutritional risk.
